Thereu2019s probably too many questions within this question to truly get at an answer but Iu2019m going to try.The main example cited here is the FedEx logo. A logo by its nature is almost always going to be simple and it might be helpful to use a more descriptive term hereu2014a mark (or wordmark). Just the word u201cmarku201d sounds simple. A mark intended to be quick identifier of a brand or organization that is often the first interaction a person has with that brand and it needs to work within a broad array of applications and media. Thatu2019s a complicated job. It needs to be bold and catchy enough to work on its own as a picture and it has to integrate into (potentially) hundreds of applications. I donu2019t know the story of the FedEx logo very well but I imagine that the project took a bare minimum of 6 months of full-time work (Iu2019d actually guess 12u201318 months) and that every time a logo got close to feeling u201cdoneu201d, the designers probably started mocking it up into trucks, packaging and business cards to see how it worked. Even if you think the FedEx logo is simple, the process to arrive at the final logo was likely a brutal slog through hundreds of sketches.Thereu2019s another angle to this though which is the nature of the client. My experience is that the smaller the client the more complicated they make their projects. Non-profits are notorious for packing too many ideas and too much content into their marketing materials. This results in pieces that are difficult to comprehend or recall on any frontu2014visually, textually, mentally. Successful top-tier corporations tend to have one thing in commonu2014they say one thing at a time. What qualities do the marketing of Apple, Starbucks, Target and Nike really share? Pretty much nothing except that they only say or ask for one thing at a time. That has very little to do with designers justifying simple design. Its a concerted effort from everyone involved in the process to distill down to a core idea and express it clearly. It stands to reason that this thinking is applied to branding. That last thing to consider is the status of those in the room. Pentagram are Pentagram. They are a global consultancy with decades of experience. Theyu2019re amongst the few designers that get routinely quoted in national media. They inspire hero worship within the design scene at large. They come recommended by famous people. Clients write press releases when they hire a Paula Scher or Michael Beirut. When theyu2019re in the room, they have status. They are the experts. Couple this with the fact that most people (designers or otherwise) have terrible taste and are basically waiting to be told what is good (or they are displaying their good taste by hiring Pentagram) and you have scenario that makes it easier for Pentagram (or Bruce Mau, David Carson, Sagmeister & Walsh, Jessica Hische, etc) to sell their work to clients.All of the above only covers celebrity designers making safe-ish work for corporations and famous people. What about unknown designers who get clients to buy stripped down work? Thereu2019s a million reasonsu2014maybe thatu2019s what attracted the client to the designer. Maybe client and designer thought it would stand out in the market. Maybe they thought it would conform to the market. Maybe thatu2019s the trend. Maybe it was a strong-willed designer and a now unhappy client. Its also quite likely that they didnu2019t have enough time to push further or perhaps they agreed it was just plain good enough as is.
How much does a graphic designer charge?
Charging for graphic design services depends on many things. I charge by project. It saves them money and they know going in how much something will cost. I also always add a provision to include a note that any additional work that goes beyond that estimate/quote is charged by the hour (insert your hourly rate) and that you would notify them as soon as you get to that point before sending any surprise invoices. They donu2019t like that. But the rate you use to figure how much you would charge per project is based on your hourly rate. If you eit will take you 10 hours to do a project from start to finish and your hourly rate is $50 (thatu2019s low for a pro and freelance) then your rate could be $450 total + any additional work that goes beyond the scope of the project. They are getting a u201cdealu201d doing it as a project. I never give them a number when someone asks how much I charge per houru2026because thatu2019s not how I work my fees. I tell them I charge by project because it gives them a better rate and they know going in how much itu2019ll cost. You have to be specific when you give the quote. Include how many revisions and timelines. You should stick to your timeline but know that they wonu2019t necessarily stick to theirs. Keep that in mind. ANDu2026if they have a deadline that you are trying to meet, if they take too long to get you changes (based on the timeline you created) then that also changes when the project can be done. You canu2019t add time to a clock. Be very clear about what and how you will deliver. This is all based on your experience. Donu2019t charge pro prices if you donu2019t know what youu2019re doing. Over promise. Under deliver. If you are new to design, do some research and see what other newbies are charging. Be better. Better service. Better goods. Listen. As you do projects youu2019ll gain a better perspective on what to charge. Youu2019ll lose on some initially. Heck, it even happens as you get more experienced sometimes (if you like the people). Just donu2019t get sucked in to them adding to the project beyond the scope. Always be professional. Test the waters. Have fun. Work hard. ALWAYS be learning more. Rock on.

Is it better to hire a UI/graphic designer for equity or to contract that work?
Most likely not, but it totally depends on many factors. How much do you think your company will worth, how much equity designer will accept as a payment, how much an alternative source of funding the project will cost you, how available the alternative funding. The biggest factor would be how much you value the equity vs. how much the designer values it. I bet the difference would be in order of magnitude so designer would demand a portion of equity that you would value much higher and funding the project from other sources would make more sense. But that's a guess, get into excel and build a model that would give you much more precise answer.
